Make a Difference for the Environment: Help Clean Up State Historic Park

On April 22, 2023, the California State Parks Foundation will be hosting an Earth Day Climate Action 2023 Clean Up event at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. This event is part of a month-long celebration of stewardship and climate action aimed at supporting California State Parks by bolstering their climate resiliency. The event invites volunteers of all ages to participate in picking up trash at different locations within the park and removing invasive weeds in the gardens and interpretive spaces.

To start the event, volunteers will be divided into teams and assigned to different areas within the park. Each team will be tasked with picking up as much trash as possible, and upon returning to the event station, their buckets will be weighed to determine which team has collected the most. This friendly competition fosters a sense of camaraderie and encourages teamwork toward a common goal.

In addition to the trash clean-up, volunteers can also choose to take on an extra challenge by helping remove invasive weeds in the park’s gardens and interpretive spaces. This effort will help protect the natural ecosystems within the park and preserve habitats for endangered and threatened species.

Old Town San Diego State Historic Park attracts over 4 million visitors annually and is located within the San Diego Bay Watershed Management Area. As a result, the park is an integral part of the local ecosystem and contains a variety of unique and diverse ecosystems. By participating in this cleanup event, volunteers can help prevent urban pollutants like plastic, cigarette butts, and other trash from entering the watershed’s water supply.

Following the cleanup, volunteers can enjoy the free museums and concession shops in the park to learn more about the history of San Diego and relax after a day of hard work.

Minors must be accompanied by an adult and bring a waiver signed by their guardian to participate in the event. The event is open to all ages, and volunteers are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and shoes, bring sunscreen and water, and be prepared to get a little dirty.

The California State Parks Foundation’s Earth Day Climate Action 2023 Clean Up event at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is an excellent opportunity to give back to the community and help preserve our natural environment. By participating in this event, volunteers can make a real difference in keeping our world beautiful for generations to come. So, bring your friends and family, and join us in the effort to keep Old Town San Diego State Historic Park clean and healthy!
