Explore Heritage County Park’s Victorian Treasures

Looking for a unique travel destination that will take you back in time? Look no further than San Diego’s Heritage County Park! This magnificent 7.8-acre county park is dedicated to preserving San Diego’s Victorian architecture and boasts beautifully-preserved buildings that tell the story of the city’s rich history.

Explore the charming Senlis Cottage, a modest dwelling built for an employee of San Diego pioneer horticulturist Kate Sessions, and experience what life was like for working-class people in the 1880s. Marvel at the Sherman-Gilbert House, built in 1887 and first owned by John Sherman, cousin of General William Tecumseh Sherman, which features a captivating “widow’s walk” and circular window. Don’t miss the Christian House, built in 1889, or the Bushyhead House, constructed by an early San Diego sheriff, chief of police, and newspaper owner who was part Cherokee Indian and marched in the “Trail of Tears” during the displacement of Southeastern tribes in 1838-39.

Discover the McConaughy House, named for its founder who established the first scheduled passenger and freight service in San Diego County, and the Burton House, built by a retired Army physician during a trend that aimed to eliminate decoration. And don’t forget to visit Temple Beth Israel, San Diego’s first synagogue, which reflects the church styles of the late 1800s and is open daily for public viewing, except during private events.

In addition to exploring the historic buildings, visitors can enjoy delightful photo opportunities and an authentic experience at Coral Tree Tea Room. Styled after the grand estates of the Victorian era, Coral Tree features a picturesque setting that is perfect for enjoying a leisurely afternoon tea complete with delicious pastries, hand-selected teas, and charming service.

Heritage County Park is open daily from sunrise to sunset and is located at the corner of Juan and Harney Streets. So why not plan your visit and step back in time to a bygone era! This is a journey you won’t want to miss!
